I cordially welcome you to Rupahi College. This institution of higher learning has been growing and serving the young aspiring students of Rupahi and its neighbouring areas for more than four decades since its inception in 1981. In recent years, the college has emerged as a destination for the students from different districts of Assam for studying Bachelor in Vocation (B.Voc.). Although Rupahi College started its journey as a single discipline college in Arts, by now, it provides graduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce and Vocation. Affiliated to Gauhati university, it also provides post graduate teaching in Arabic.
Rupahi is inhabited by religious and linguistic minority communities and several tribal groups. During last four decades of existence, Rupahi College has been successfully imparting higher education to socio-economically disempowered communities living around the college. It has been particularly contributing to women education among these disempowered communities and groups. At present, in the college, girl students outnumber the boy students. This contribution of Rupahi College towards higher education among girls which leads to women empowerment, has even been recognized by NAAC peer team as a great contribution to the society and a real Best Practice.
With the starting of new admission into undergraduate courses in 2023, we are entering into a new era of education system as prescribed by New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The implementation of NEP 2020 is a big challenge before the colleges located in rural areas like ours with scarce resources. However, our college is in a better position compared to many such colleges in many fronts. The NEP speaks about large institution of higher learning with multidisciplinary teaching-learning. We have already been offering B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., and B.Voc. Degrees, and in 2022, student strength of the college crossed 2500. The thrust of the NEP on multidisciplinary education has opened up new doors of opportunities before us. With growing infrastructure and competent and dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff, we expect to attract more and more students to the institution in the coming years. The newly constructed girls’ hostel will provide safe, comfortable stay in an academic environment for the girls from distant places who wish to study in the college.
Rupahi College always encourages sports and extracurricular activities among the students for their overall development. Kabaddi is the most popular sport among the students of Rupahi College and both boys and girls of the College have excelled in the sport in different inter college competitions in recent years. The college has been extending facilities for both indoor and outdoor games. We have also put special emphasis in cultural and literary activities among the students. Besides the celebration of the college week, we observe important national days and celebrate important festivals of different communities. The college has a sound proof auditorium and a seminar hall where academic discussions are organized in regular intervals. In the open stage, popular talks of eminent personalities are organized. To discharge its duty and responsibility towards the people living around the college, we have been conducting awareness and extension programs in neighbouring villages and high and higher secondary schools. The need of girl education is the theme of our extension programs and we have been conducting awareness programs against child marriage and consumption of drugs. Several prominent personalities and government officers have taken part in these programs for making the society aware of these issues. The Medical Laboratory Technician Department of the college has even successfully conducted a few free medical check up camps in association with government and nongovernmental organizations. Rupahi College has decided to continue the extension activities for girl education and awareness programs against the prevalence of child marriage and drug usage to ensure a brighter and healthier future for the youth of Rupahi.
An institution of higher learning has to rise itself up to the fullest possible height for commended recognition. We have been tirelessly trying for this. Despite different challenges we have been facing as a college located in a rural area, we have never deviated from the primary duty of an educational institution, i.e., to maintain a quality teaching-learning environment and to impart quality education. In this regard, our central library has also been playing a significant role by helping the needy students throughout their study in Rupahi College. Regarding the challenges, we are planning to address them in attainable and planned way.
As the Principal of this premier institution, I can take the responsibility to ensure a quality of education and an opportunity to learn for living a better life in Rupahi College which will definitely enrich the future of every student.
